AMA Supercross Review: Arlington Round Incidents Under Scrutiny
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is currently reviewing two racing incidents from the Arlington round of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, involving both the 250SX and 450SX main events.
250SX Main Event Incident
In a critical moment towards the conclusion of the 250SX race, Derek Kelley encountered a cross rut, redirecting him into the finish line area while facing the wrong way. He utilized the rear of the finish line jump to re-enter the track. During this time, red lights were activated on the small double preceding the finish line, impacting the following riders.
Jo Shimoda, who rolled over the finish jump due to reduced speed from the previous double, was overtaken by Pierce Brown, who cleared both jumps despite the ongoing red lights. This pass, which occurred under disputed circumstances, led to Brown securing his first career 250SX win, while Shimoda finished second.
Technical Insight and Rule Implications
Lars Lindstrom, team manager for Honda HRC Progressive, voiced concerns regarding the enforcement of race regulations. He emphasized that such a pass during active red lights constitutes a violation, which typically results in the loss of both the gained position and five championship points. Notably, while the red light was only applicable to the prior double, Shimoda’s inability to jump the finish due to speed constraints has complicated the situation.
“The rulebook should be upheld,” stated Lindstrom after the race. “Jo did the right thing by rolling. Now is the time for clarity and adherence to the rules, which stipulate a penalty for the position gained under red lights.”
Ongoing Review
As the AMA’s review continues, no official updates have been released. The outcome will be significant in determining the standings and repercussions for the involved riders, particularly concerning championship points and prize money.
