Southwick: A Unique Challenge on the Pro Motocross Circuit
Southwick, MA – The Southwick track, known as “The Wick 338,” stands out as one of the most distinctive venues in the Pro Motocross circuit. Nestled within the charming small town, the sandy course interacts closely with local amenities, providing a striking contrast between small-town life and high-stakes motocross competition.
As one of the few full sand courses in the series, Southwick presents its own unique challenges. Unlike the deep, technical tracks of Lommel, the Southwick surface features a harder base and square-edged bumps, influencing rider strategy. Competitors must expertly navigate the big sand berms while finding the "sweet spot" to avoid excessive wheel spin and maintain momentum. Successful passage through the berms requires a blend of patience and aggression, emphasizing precise timing for optimal traction.
The track crew, including veterans like John Dowd, Keith Johnson, and Doug Henry, has replenished the sand depth this year after a rain-related setback in 2024. Rain is on the forecast; however, the sand’s absorptive qualities may mitigate potential issues, making Southwick a venue capable of withstanding adverse weather better than others on the circuit.
As the race approaches, all eyes will be on how riders adapt to the nuanced dynamics of this beloved yet demanding course.
