Shimoda Clinches Championship with Strategic Maneuvering at Las Vegas

In a dramatic finale of the 250cc motocross season at Las Vegas, Jo Shimoda secured the championship title by executing a last-lap pass on Tom Vialle, ultimately finishing 1-2 for an overall victory. Despite not needing to win outright to clinch the title, Shimoda expressed a clear desire for victory, stating, “I kind of just wanted to win. That was my goal… we just wanted to go and try to win the motos.”

The race unfolded dramatically after a significant crash allowed Seth Hammaker to temporarily assume the lead. However, Shimoda’s decisive move in the final turn underscored his competitive edge. Reflecting on the intense pressure of the event, he noted the importance of maintaining composure and readiness for on-track encounters, particularly with competitor Haiden Deegan. “I was just ready for it. All these three rounds, he was fast,” Shimoda commented on Deegan’s aggressive riding style, asserting his recognition of the inherent challenges.

Honda HRC Progressive Team Manager Lars Lindstrom praised Shimoda’s performance under pressure, highlighting the weekend’s unexpected opportunities. “I’m so proud of Jo for dealing with the crazy pressure and performing the way he did. I think it was a big turning point in his career!” he remarked.

Amid the competition’s tension, a light-hearted exchange occurred between Shimoda and Deegan before the race, revealing the cultural and linguistic barriers Shimoda overcame since moving from Japan. “He [Deegan] said, ‘You’re never going to know what’s about to come,’ and I said, ‘I don’t speak English,’” Shimoda recounted, showcasing his comedic resilience.

As the season concludes, Shimoda’s triumphant campaign signals a promising future, while the rivalry with Deegan intensifies heading into the next season.
