2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Opener: Jorge Prado Shines Amidst Controversy

In an electric start to the 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season, Jorge Prado made headlines by securing his first podium finish in the premier 450SX class, although it was marred by a post-race penalty.

Prado displayed impressive skill during his heat race, executing a strong launch and swiftly capitalizing on a crash involving Cooper Webb and Aaron Plessinger, ultimately clinching the heat race victory. This marked his second heat race win, previously accomplished at the 2024 San Francisco SX.

The main event saw Prado achieve the holeshot and establish an early lead before being challenged by teammate Eli Tomac. Despite fierce competition, including a notable battle with Ken Roczen, Prado secured third place as he crossed the finish line. This achievement demonstrates significant improvement compared to his performance in 2025 and concludes his third main event start on a high note.

However, in a twist, the SuperMotocross League announced post-race that Prado failed a sound check, resulting in a three-point penalty. As a consequence, he retained his third-place finish but received 17 points instead of the standard 20, placing him tied for fourth in the 450SX standings with Jason Anderson, who also has 17 points. Hunter Lawrence holds the fourth spot after finishing second with 18 points.

The official statement from the League was succinct:
“Jorge Prado has been docked 3 championship points for failing post race sound check.”

As the season unfolds, Prado’s performance indicates a promising return to form with Red Bull KTM. His ability to maintain this momentum will be crucial in the upcoming races.
