Barcia Faces Recovery Challenge Ahead of Supercross Season
In a significant setback, Justin Barcia has re-injured his collarbone just weeks after debuting on the new Ducati Desmo450 MX. The 31-year-old rider, who recently joined Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Ducati Factory Racing, sustained the injury during his first week of training on the new bike, complicating his recovery due to previous surgeries on the same bone.
Barcia detailed the extent of his injury: “I broke the edge of my plate that was already in there, so it’s a little more tricky than a normal collarbone. I had to take the plate out, put a new plate in, move it over,” he explained. Currently, he is focusing on maintaining his fitness while awaiting medical clearance to return to riding.
Targeting the Anaheim 1 Supercross opener, Barcia remains hopeful despite acknowledging the challenges ahead. “Usually a collarbone [recovery] is like four weeks, but this one’s going to be longer. Unfortunately, part of it,” he stated. He is scheduled for another X-ray in a week to assess his healing progress and has expressed that while getting back on the bike by Christmas is his goal, it may not be feasible without further complications.
In an Instagram update, Barcia expressed gratitude for the support of his fans and reiterated his commitment to returning for the first race. “This is just a little speed bump in the road. We always push through things,” he said, highlighting his extensive experience in racing and his agility to adapt to the challenges posed by a new team and bike.
Barcia’s recovery and return will be closely monitored as he aims to utilize his experience to excel throughout the upcoming Supercross season.
