Justin Cooper Eyes Championship Breakthrough as Playoffs Approach
As the 2024 SMX series intensifies, Justin Cooper, currently eighth in the points standings, remains determined to secure his first victory in the 450 class. Despite three third-place finishes in supercross and three top-three finishes outdoors, the New Yorker is laser-focused on claiming a win this season.
“It’s tough. This is a deep class with a lot of talent,” said Cooper, the 2021 AMA 250SX West Supercross Champion. “Podium finishes don’t come easy, but I’m ready to put everything into that win. I believe we’re close, and there’s no better time than now during the playoffs.”
Cooper expressed enthusiasm about competing with the red plate, a symbol of championship leadership, after not having it since his time in the 250 class. “Everyone’s excited to switch things up after the long summer outdoors. Now it’s about focusing on the playoffs; three more rounds remain.”
Despite the pressure, Cooper emphasizes the importance of a measured approach throughout the 31-race season. “You can’t get too far ahead of yourself. I’ve found that concentrating on each race week by week has helped my motivation.”
Reflecting on his 2024 performance, which he considers commendable despite challenges—including a DNF due to a crash and a ride with a broken collarbone—Cooper views his eighth-place finish as a foundation for improvement in the upcoming season.
The hybrid SMX tracks, combining the precision of supercross with the challenges of outdoor motocross, present a unique test for riders. “These tracks are exciting and offer a fresh start,” he stated. “Everyone has limited experience on them, which adds to the challenge. A good start will be crucial, as the margins in these races are tight.”
As the playoffs unfold, all eyes will be on Cooper as he seeks to convert his podium finishes into a long-awaited victory.
