Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany: Qualifying Race Report
Langenfeld, Germany—The spotlight shone bright on reigning World Champion Kay de Wolf as he secured the top spot in Time Practice for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, dispelling any doubts about his fitness. Sacha Coenen came in a close second, just 0.017 seconds behind. Home favorite Simon Laengenfelder rounded out the top three, setting the stage for an intense Qualifying Race.
In unfortunate news for Honda HRC, Ferruccio Zanchi suffered a knee injury during Free Practice and will be unable to compete in tomorrow’s GP. We wish him a swift recovery.
The Qualifying Race began with a thrilling holeshot from Valerio Lata of Honda HRC, who narrowly edged out Coenen into turn one, while Laengenfelder briefly claimed second before Coenen regained control down the start straight.
As the race progressed, Italian rider Adamo advanced, overtaking Laengenfelder to secure third, while Oriol Oliver, despite an early mistake costing him three positions, battled back for sixth. De Wolf encountered trouble, losing traction and crashing on lap four, ultimately finishing in fifteenth.
Camden McLellan and Thibault Benistant engaged in a race-long duel, with Benistant securing eighth in the final laps. Oliver put pressure on the leaders, but Liam Everts capitalized in the last lap, passing Oliver for sixth.
Laengenfelder provided a highlight by executing a stunning pass on Lata over a triple jump to claim fourth, limiting the points loss to Adamo to just ten. De Wolf’s disappointing finish puts him 32 points behind Laengenfelder in the championship standings.
Valerio Lata’s remarkable performance not only earned him the win by a margin of nearly four seconds, but also propelled him to eighth in the championship rankings, further emphasizing the competitive landscape this season.
With each of the top nine riders having secured a race win this season, tomorrow’s main GP races promise to be a thrilling contest. Fans can expect an exciting showdown in the heart of Germany.
