MXGP Preview: Finland Set for Exciting Weekend at KymiRing

KymiRing, Finland – The 2025 MXGP season continues with heightened anticipation as the series heads to KymiRing, marking the first-time Grand Prix circuit. Romain Febvre of Kawasaki Racing Team leads the MXGP standings, coming off a dominant victory at Matterley Basin, where he secured his fourth win of the season. He currently holds a 32-point advantage over Lucas Coenen of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, who is eager to break his streak of second-place finishes at this challenging sandy venue.

Key Competitors
Febvre’s recent win helped him alleviate concerns over losing ground to Coenen, who has consistently finished as runner-up in the last five GPs. “Winning at Matterley was crucial for my confidence,” Febvre stated. Glenn Coldenhoff, riding for Fantic Factory Racing, retains a strong position in third overall, having recently celebrated his inaugural GP victory. He previously finished third in Finland’s 2023 GP, setting him up as a contender this weekend.

In MX2, Simon Längenfelder, also from Red Bull KTM, commands a significant points lead with a 52-point cushion over 2023 World Champion Andrea Adamo. Adamo, fresh off a win in Finland last year, is keen to close the gap further. Meanwhile, Kay de Wolf, the reigning champion, aims to capitalize on his first GP experience in Finnish sand.

EMX Championships
The EMX250 Championship reaches its tenth round at KymiRing, where Janis Reisulis of VHR VRT Yamaha leads the standings. Despite recent podium droughts for both Reisulis and his closest rival, Noel Zanocz of JM Honda Racing, the competition remains fierce. Notably, the FIM Junior World Champions Ivano Van Erp and Gyan Doensen could shake up the podium positions.

The EMX125 Championship will also unfold, with MJC Yamaha’s Mano Faure and KTM’s Nicolò Alvisi tied on points for the lead. Faure is in form, having clinched the 125cc title at the FIM World Junior Championships last weekend.

Injury Updates
Injuries pose a challenge this weekend, particularly for top competitors. Maxime Renaux (Monster Energy Yamaha) and Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM) are likely to miss the event due to ongoing recuperation and a recent training crash, respectively. Their absence opens opportunities for riders like Honda’s Ruben Fernandez, who is currently fourth in the championship.

Local Representation and Expectations
The event marks a notable occasion for local talent, with Finnish riders aiming to capitalize on home advantage. Jere Haavisto is currently the sole Finn to score points this season, and the addition of Estonian wildcards adds further intrigue.

As the MXGP elite prepare for their inaugural challenge at KymiRing, expect fierce competition and strategic racing this weekend as they vie for the honor of becoming the first winner on this new circuit.
