SMX Series Feedback Highlights Challenges Ahead of Upcoming Races

In recent comments following the SMX Series events, notable riders voiced concerns regarding the track conditions and the format of qualifying stages. Riders like Chase Sexton have expressed worries about safety, following troubling performances in the Wild Card races. The harsh realities of the drag strip sections have been particularly challenging, raising questions about raceability.

Several riders, including Cameron McAdoo and Phil Nicoletti, have criticized the current LCQ (Last Chance Qualifier) setup. One competitor underscored that consistently finishing 12-12-13 yet having to race in the LCQ every weekend felt excessive. This sentiment reflects a broader dissatisfaction among riders, who suggest that more can be done to streamline participation and improve the experience.

A significant point of contention discussed was the disparities between Supercross and motocross formats. With Supercross offering 17 scoring opportunities compared to 22 in motocross, there are calls for an adjustment to align the SMX points system more closely with Supercross standards. “Supercross should count more,” stated one rider, emphasizing the status of Supercross as the premier series.

Suggestions were put forth for modifying race logistics, including conducting the Wild Card races on Fridays to grant better gate picks for the main events. Concerns were raised that current practices reward qualification but limit advantageous starting positions, a situation described as “ridiculous.”

While riders acknowledged the potential benefits of Wild Card races, the consensus remained clear: changes are needed to enhance the fairness and safety of the competition as the SMX Series progresses.

As the series continues, these insights from the paddock highlight a critical need for further dialogue between teams, organizers, and competitors to ensure the long-term success and enjoyment of the sport.
