Bobby Bonds: A Retrospective on a Motorsports Legend

In a surprising move, the latest issue of Racer X Magazine features Bobby Bonds on its cover, celebrating the motocross athlete’s significant yet underrecognized impact on the sport. Often remembered as a prodigy during the early 2000s, Bonds was the focal point of a heated bidding war between Honda and Pro Circuit Kawasaki.

Bonds made headlines when he joined Mitch Payton’s Pro Circuit team and quickly demonstrated his skill, finishing impressively in his second 125 National race at Hangtown. Unfortunately, a fateful collision with Grant Langston during that event thwarted his momentum. The crash, which occurred as Bonds attempted to overtake Langston, marked a turning point and foreshadowed a career plagued by injuries.

Despite a promising start, Bonds’ trajectory altered drastically after his two-year stint with Pro Circuit, failing to secure a ride post-contract. He later transitioned to WORCS off-road racing, where he clinched a championship title. While his motocross aspirations didn’t materialize as expected, he shifted focus to nurturing young talent in Bakersfield, coaching riders like Stilez Robertson and Jett Reynolds.

In a recent PulpMX podcast, Bonds recounted his journey and reflected on his enduring passion for motocross. The editorial team’s decision to feature him stems from an appreciation of his untold story, coinciding with the need for a cover image ahead of the Anaheim opener. A retro cover was deemed fitting, highlighting a photograph by Simon Cudby from the 2001 High Point National—capturing both the nostalgia and the legacy of a rider who never attained the podium but remains a respected figure in the sport’s history.
