Herlings Dominates MXGP Season Opener in Argentina

Argentina, March 2023—Jeffrey Herlings marked an impressive debut with Honda HRC PETRONAS by clinching victory at the opening Grand Prix of the MXGP season, held last weekend in Argentina. Herlings’ win not only underscores his adaptability but also resonates with historical parallels, echoing the remarkable debut of motocross legend Stefan Everts 25 years earlier.

Herlings, having transitioned to Honda after a significant tenure with KTM, showcased his prowess and command on the track despite the brief acclimatization to his new machine. His performance raises expectations for a strong season ahead as he navigates the competitive landscape of motocross.

Reflecting on both riders’ debut wins, Everts shared insights on returning to competition after extensive injuries. In 2001, he experienced a similar situation, returning from a two-year hiatus with significant doubts surrounding his performance. Riding for Yamaha at the Bellpuig circuit, he faced reigning champion Joel Smets, who was in formidable form.

Everts recalled, “Coming back from two years of injuries wasn’t easy for my confidence…but winning in Bellpuig was a big confidence shot and very important for me.” He acknowledged the mental challenge of competing, even though his riding felt solid.

Everts also commented on Herlings’ recent feat: “You never know where you are after a bike change, but he handled the pressure and delivered a great result.”

Both riders’ journeys highlight the resilience required to succeed at the highest levels of motocross, making Herlings’ victory a promising indicator of what lies ahead in the 2023 season.
