Febvre Reflects on MXGP Season, Eyes Championship Glory in 2026
In a recent interview, two-time MXGP World Champion Romain Febvre assessed his strong performance in the 2025 season, where he secured a runner-up finish, competing intensely with rising star Lucas Coenen. Febvre, who has accrued six Grand Prix victories, emphasized the importance of experience in adapting race strategies: “Consistency and speed are the same things you can play around with via experience,” he noted. His performance this season was marked by exceptional consistency, with his lowest finish being fifth overall.
The 18-year-old Coenen provided a fierce challenge throughout the season. Febvre acknowledged his talent: “He’s young; he’s almost half of my age. I see me when I won my first title in him.” Coenen demonstrated impressive technique and fearlessness, which made him a formidable competitor, especially in the early races. “In the first part of the season, he showed everybody what he had to offer,” Febvre remarked, highlighting the necessity for vigilance as Coenen closed the championship gap.
Looking ahead to the 2026 season, Febvre expressed ambition for a third title, contingent on a solid off-season and adaptation within the evolving competitive landscape, where significant rider movements are anticipated. “If it’s possible, then yes, I am going for it,” he stated, emphasizing optimism about his prospects based on impending rider transitions.
With the potential for new dynamics in team alignments—particularly involving competitors like Jeffrey Herlings and Tim Gajser—Febvre aims to capitalize early in the season to contend for both Grand Prix victories and the championship once again.
