DETROIT SX REPORT: ELI TOMAC REGAINS POINTS LEAD DESPITE LACKLUSTER PERFORMANCE
Eli Tomac of Red Bull KTM has reclaimed the points lead in the 2023 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship following a challenging night at the Detroit Supercross. Despite finishing fifth, his position allowed a critical 13-point swing in the standings due to Hunter Lawrence’s significant misstep.
Tomac’s performance marked a continuation of struggles, following a third-place finish in Birmingham where he was 30 seconds behind the leader. In Detroit, he was 17.135 seconds off the pace, unable to contend with the top competitors. His qualifying time was approximately one second slower than Lawrence’s, suggesting a persistent off-form, with Tomac expressing frustration post-race.
“Overall, it was a bit of a frustrating day here… I just haven’t had the best success at Detroit lately,” Tomac stated in the post-race KTM release, acknowledging a possible mid-season slump and committing to improvement.
The shake-up in the standings came when Lawrence, who was leading, fell in the whoops section and finished 18th. Tomac entered the race nine points behind but now leads Lawrence by four.
As the series progresses, Tomac will seek to harness his experience and regain the competitive edge needed to dominate upcoming rounds.
