Pro Motocross Championship: Trevor Colip’s Critical Recovery Journey

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA—In a tragic incident during qualifying for the Pro Motocross Championship Series, professional racer Trevor Colip sustained a severe injury that has led to multifaceted health complications. As of June 14, 2025, Colip remains hospitalized, facing a challenging recovery.

On May 31, during the second 250 Group A qualifying session at Round 2 of the series, Colip suffered a broken femur. Initially responsive, his condition deteriorated following an invasive procedure that placed his leg in traction, during which he became unresponsive. Subsequent MRI scans revealed he had suffered multiple strokes, attributed to the release of fatty emboli from his bone marrow into his bloodstream.

Medical investigations suggested that a suspected patent foramen ovale (PFO), a hole in the heart, allowed these emboli to reach his brain. However, attempts to repair this defect during heart surgery were inconclusive, prompting further examinations that led doctors to suspect arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) in the lungs as the source of the emboli.

Colip has undergone several surgeries for both the femur and the suspected cardiac and pulmonary issues. Due to the risks associated with traditional fixation methods for the broken femur, his surgical team opted for a plate and screw approach, which was performed on June 14. His femur is now in the healing process.

Despite being alert post-surgery, Colip continues to experience significant pain, and his full neurological status remains uncertain due to the effects of medication and ongoing complications. His family has been by his side throughout this ordeal and is seeking financial support for the substantial medical expenses, estimating that a medical flight home to Indiana could cost approximately $65,000, with additional therapy needs reaching $60,000.

The motorsports community is rallying behind Colip, and donations can be made to support his recovery through the Road2Recovery initiative.
