WSX and AUSX Supercross Championships Clash in Australia

This weekend, motorsports fans in Australia are faced with a double-header of supercross action, featuring the FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) Australian GP in Queensland and the Boost Mobile AUSX Supercross Championship finale in Adelaide. The significance of these events cannot be overstated, as the AUSX finale will determine this year’s Australian Supercross Champions, coinciding with the final round of the Australian Supercars Championship—a notable convergence akin to the NASCAR Championship finale in the U.S.

The WSX event boasts an elite roster, including talents such as Ken Roczen, Eli Tomac, Cooper Webb, and rising star Haiden Deegan competing in the 450 class. This high-profile lineup positions the Queensland race as a critical battleground for Deegan against several established champions.

Despite their geographical separation of over 1,000 miles, the simultaneous scheduling of these events has sparked considerable concern regarding audience engagement and media coverage. Notably, the Australian media outlet MotoOnline has highlighted the potential conflict, arguing that it could dilute interest in both competitions.

Historical context is vital here. WSX, led by Adam Bailey, initially aimed to integrate into Australian supercross but has since undergone ownership changes following a less-than-successful launch. As Bailey has returned to focus on the AUSX, he has expressed disappointment that Motorcycling Australia did not intervene to prevent the scheduling clash, suggesting that WSX’s actions were intentionally disruptive.

“They come this year to intentionally, in my opinion, impact our series,” Bailey asserted in an interview with MotoOnline. “Going on the same date [as Adelaide] is clearly an attempt to do that… I think it’s disappointing that we weren’t protected from that by MA… My opinion is that [it’s] bully tactics by them [SX Global].”

As both events unfold, the dynamics of audience attention and competitive spirit will be closely monitored, marking a pivotal moment in Australia’s supercross landscape.
