Bowman Cleared to Compete After Harrowing Crash at Michigan
June 25, 2023 — Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports sustained a severe crash during the NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway, leading to an early retirement from the event.
On Lap 67, Bowman’s No. 48 Chevrolet experienced a devastating head-on collision with the outside wall at approximately 150 mph, triggered by contact from Cole Custer. The impact elevated the rear tires off the ground, marking one of the most significant crashes of Bowman’s career.
Reflecting on the incident, Bowman stated, "It was a huge hit, possibly the biggest of my career," highlighting concerns given his recent injury history, which includes a concussion from a crash at Texas Motor Speedway in 2022 and a back injury from a sprint car accident earlier this year.
Despite some lingering soreness, Bowman has been medically cleared to participate in the upcoming road course event in Mexico City, a critical opportunity as he seeks to regain momentum — his last Cup Series win was at the Chicago Street Course in July 2022.
In anticipation of potential issues, Hendrick Motorsports has Anthony Alfredo on standby. The full-time Xfinity Series driver has previously competed in 42 Cup Series races, including an outing at Talladega Superspeedway earlier this season.
Currently sitting 13th in the championship standings, Bowman faces an uphill battle, having recorded seven finishes of 27th or worse in the last nine races.
As the team prepares for the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, all eyes are on Bowman for a performance turnaround.
