Tragic Plane Crash Claims NASCAR Driver Greg Biffle and Family
In a devastating incident on Thursday morning, NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, along with six others, perished in a plane crash at Statesville Regional Airport. The Cessna C550, owned by Biffle, crashed while attempting to land around 10:20 AM local time, creating a significant fireball upon impact. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) overseeing further inquiries.
Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell confirmed fatalities at a press briefing, withholding specific details until official identifications were made. However, U.S. Congressman Richard Hudson later announced via social media that Biffle and his immediate family were among the deceased, a fact confirmed by NASCAR.
NASCAR issued a statement expressing profound sorrow over the loss. “Greg was more than a champion driver; he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community. His integrity and passion left an indelible mark on the sport,” the statement read. Biffle’s impressive career included championships in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (2002) and the Craftsman Truck Series (2000), alongside 56 wins across NASCAR’s three national series.
A joint statement from the Biffle, Grossu, Dutton, and Lunders families conveyed their heartbreak, acknowledging Biffle and his wife Cristina as dedicated parents and philanthropists. They emphasized the profound impact of their loss, stating, “Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives.”
As investigations into the crash proceed, NASCAR and the broader motorsports community mourn the passing of a talented driver and valued community member, whose contributions extended beyond the racetrack.
