Chris Gayle’s Leadership Propels Denny Hamlin to Sixth Win of the Season

Las Vegas, NV — Denny Hamlin, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, secured an emotional victory at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, marking his sixth win of the season and 60th career victory. This win not only solidifies Hamlin’s position in the Championship 4 but also underscores the successful tenure of crew chief Chris Gayle, who has led the No. 11 team to a resurgence following past challenges.

Chris Gayle, who has just over a year of experience as a Cup Series crew chief, shifted from leading Erik Jones and Ty Gibbs to Hamlin this season. “It was an incredible year for me,” said Gayle. “I’ve had great opportunities, but I needed to step up and win right away.” His leadership has resulted in the most victories for Hamlin since the 2020 season, surpassing his previous wins with Jones.

The victory at Las Vegas was significant for both Hamlin and Gayle. “I really appreciate his leadership,” said Hamlin. “He pushes me as hard as Gabehart did, and he’s earned my respect.” This acknowledgment highlights the effective partnership that has developed, even as Hamlin experienced initial skepticism about Gayle’s credentials.

The transition of leadership from Chris Gabehart—who previously oversaw Hamlin’s racing efforts—has proven fruitful. “It’s safe to say the baton was handed off very carefully,” Gabehart stated, accurately reflecting the gradual confidence in Gayle’s leadership, which has been evident in the team’s improved performance.

As the series approaches the final race at Phoenix Raceway, Hamlin looks to seize the elusive Cup Series championship that has eluded him in previous seasons. With Gayle’s guidance and newfound momentum, the No. 11 team could be primed for a strong showing.

Gayle, who previously achieved an Xfinity Series championship with Ty Gibbs in 2022, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to compete at such a high level. “17-year-old Chris Gayle would have killed for this moment,” he reflected. “I’m going to soak it in and enjoy the next three weeks.”

As both Hamlin and Gayle prepare for Phoenix, the upcoming race could define the next chapter in their nascent partnership and mark a significant milestone in Gayle’s evolving career in NASCAR.
