NASCAR Makes Historic Move to Mexico City
On June 15, NASCAR will mark a significant milestone as the Cup Series holds its first points race outside the United States, taking place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. This event signifies a crucial expansion for the series, as officials aim to engage with international markets.
NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps emphasized the importance of this venture during a visit to Brazil for the NASCAR Brazil event at Interlagos. In discussions with media, Phelps acknowledged the excitement surrounding the upcoming Mexican race while expressing hope for a future NASCAR presence in Brazil.
“It’s a big stage for us,” Phelps stated about the Mexico City event. “I think the Mexican fans are going to come out and support us; it’s going to be a great show.”
The potential for a Cup Series race in Brazil has been a topic of interest, with previous discussions about hosting ‘The Clash’ there. However, those plans have not materialized, and the race will remain at Bowman Gray Stadium for 2026.
Phelps remarked on Brazil’s racing aspirations: “I don’t know when we’ll get to Brazil, but I’d like to see it happen.” He noted the need for collaboration among stakeholders to make such an event feasible.
Brazilian Presence in NASCAR
Currently, NASCAR features international drivers like Mexico’s Daniel Suárez and New Zealand’s Shane Van Gisbergen. Phelps expressed a desire to see Brazilian talent emerge within the series, highlighting the potential for Brazilian drivers from NASCAR Brazil to compete at the highest level in the U.S.
Chad Seigler, NASCAR’s Chief International Officer, reinforced the enthusiasm about Brazil’s racing scene. “We are exceeding expectations,” he said, citing the positive reception at Interlagos. He also pointed to Gabriel Casagrande’s recent victory at New Smyrna as an indicator of Brazilian talent, noting, “He came to the U.S. and won a race in his first experience on an oval circuit.”
Seigler emphasized that the development of talent in Brazil is critical for both local growth and enhancing the NASCAR brand internationally.
Future Prospects
As NASCAR prepares to venture into Mexico, discussions about including Brazilian racing talent in the Cup Series remain open. With Helio Castroneves making his Cup debut this season, the potential for further Brazilian representation in NASCAR is promising.
With a focus on international expansion and driver development, NASCAR is poised to transform its global footprint, fostering excitement both in the United States and abroad.
