McDowell’s Strong Run at Texas Ends in Heartbreak
Fort Worth, TX – Spire Motorsports aimed for a breakthrough triumph at the Texas Motor Speedway, starting from pole position with Carson Hocevar. However, it was veteran Michael McDowell who nearly clinched a stunning upset but ultimately faced disappointment, ending his race in 26th place.
McDowell expressed his frustration following the race: “I really hate it for everyone on this No. 71 Chevrolet. We were giving it everything we had to keep track position. Joey [Logano] got a run, and I tried to block it. When [Ryan] Blaney slid up in front of me, it just took the air off, and I lost the back of it. I should have conceded at that point.”
Despite the setback, McDowell showcased his racing prowess. After opting for two tires during a critical pit stop, he seized the lead from Kyle Larson and held off challenges during several intense restarts, benefitting from the race’s chaotic closing laps marked by crashes.
As the race approached its conclusion, McDowell engaged in a fierce battle with defending champion Joey Logano. He attempted a desperate block but ultimately lost control in the turbulent air, crashing into the wall. McDowell’s crew chief reacted in disbelief as their pursuit for victory unraveled.
This race marked a significant effort for McDowell, who has over 500 Cup Series starts. Although his last victory came at the Indianapolis Road Course in 2023, his alliance with Spire aims to elevate the organization after a prolonged period without a win.
Despite finishing 26th, McDowell leaves Texas with newfound determination for upcoming races.
