Jimmie Johnson Declines Chance to Attempt ‘The Double’
Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson confirmed he had the opportunity to participate in motorsport’s demanding challenge known as "The Double," racing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. In an interview with Forbes, Johnson stated, "I had a shot at it this year, and I passed on it," emphasizing the complications that shaped his decision.
Despite pursuing the challenge during his peak years, Johnson ultimately decided against it, citing his current role as co-owner of Legacy Motor Club and the need to prepare adequately for the intense demands of the Indy 500. "This was a difficult choice for me, but in my heart, I know it’s the right one," he remarked earlier this year. Johnson’s experience includes two seasons with Chip Ganassi Racing before stepping back from IndyCar in 2023.
In contrast, Kyle Larson is set to attempt The Double this Sunday, aiming to join a select group of drivers who have successfully completed the challenge, including John Andretti, Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Kurt Busch. After a failed attempt in 2024 due to weather, Larson’s persistence continues amidst heightened visibility, as Prime Video plans to document his experience.
Stacey Rosenson, head of U.S. sports marketing at Prime Video, remarked, "Kyle’s double attempt is one of the most exciting storylines in all of sports," underscoring the significance of this moment as the platform prepares to broadcast its first NASCAR Cup Series race live.
As the motorsport community watches, Larson’s upcoming race is poised to captivate audiences and add another chapter to the storied history of The Double.
