Ram Returns to NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with Ambitions for Cup Series Comeback

In a significant development for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Ram has announced its return, signaling a strategic re-entry into the motorsports arena. Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis highlighted the move during the unveiling of the new truck, stating, “The Hemi is back,” and hinted at further future announcements. Kuniskis emphasized the company’s commitment to re-engaging with NASCAR, with aspirations to eventually compete in the Cup Series.

Dodge last participated in the Cup Series in 2012, following a championship win with Roger Penske and Brad Keselowski, before exiting the sport. Now, as Ram joins Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota, it will be the fourth manufacturer in the Truck Series.

Kuniskis acknowledged the complexities involved in re-establishing a full racing program. “I’m flying with no parachute here,” he remarked, underscoring the need for a dedicated racing team and the operational groundwork required to progress from the Truck Series to the Cup Series. He reiterated, “It’s not going to be a one-hit wonder… That’s not our plan.”

The path to entering the Cup Series involves multiple stages, including the submission of the truck’s body for NASCAR’s approval—a process that may take at least 18 months. NASCAR’s executive vice president and chief racing development officer, John Probst, expressed enthusiasm about Ram’s interest in the Cup Series.

Regarding the development of competitive engines, Probst confirmed that the core components of previous Dodge engines remain viable, stating, “They could start from that and do some catch-up development.” The decision on which Stellantis brand will represent the company in the Cup Series is still pending, as Ram, primarily a truck brand, will continue to compete in that category for the time being.

As Ram forges ahead in its NASCAR journey, the motorsports community remains keenly observant of the company’s strategic maneuvers and plans for growth within the sport.
