NASCAR Considers Horsepower Increase for Short Tracks

NASCAR officials have indicated a potential increase in horsepower from 670HP to 750HP for short tracks, with discussions ongoing about implementing this change by the end of the 2025 season.

NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer stated, “It’s on the table,” during a SiriusXM NASCAR Radio interview, emphasizing the collaborative efforts among stakeholders. NASCAR is actively engaging with team owners and engine builders to explore the implications of such a shift.

Mike Forde, NASCAR’s Managing Director of Communications, reiterated this focus in a podcast, highlighting the initiative as a proactive effort to enhance the short-track racing experience, which has faced criticism for lack of excitement.

Drivers Lend Support

Several prominent drivers have also expressed support for the increased horsepower, citing concerns about the current lack of competitive passing on short tracks. Josh Berry, who achieved victory at Las Vegas earlier this year, remarked, “I definitely think it needs more,” emphasizing the need for a significant increase to truly impact racing dynamics.

2020 NASCAR Champion Chase Elliott acknowledged the complexities involved in increasing the horsepower, noting that engine manufacturers play a crucial role in determining the feasibility of such changes. “It might not do anything, but it might really help. And until you try, I don’t know that you really have an answer,” Elliott stated, highlighting the challenge of reaching a consensus among manufacturers.

Ryan Preece also supported the horsepower boost, emphasizing how it could enhance racing tactics and fan engagement. “I’m obviously somebody that is always gonna be of the ‘give me more horsepower’," Preece stated. “We’re definitely gonna keep fans entertained, but I’m speaking selfishly as a race car driver who wants the challenge.”

As NASCAR weighs these developments, the sport may see a shift toward more powerful racing vehicles, rekindling the competitive thrill that has characterized NASCAR’s rich history.
