Hamlin Reflects on Near Miss at Phoenix Championship

Phoenix, AZ — Denny Hamlin addressed the media two days after falling short in the NASCAR Cup Series championship at Phoenix Raceway, stating, “There is not a whole lot of second-guessing, I would say.” Hamlin led 208 laps but finished sixth in the race and second in the championship standings—a result shaped by a late-race caution that triggered overtime and complex tire strategies.

Kyle Larson clinched his second championship after his team opted for two tires during the final pit stop, allowing him to gain crucial positions. In contrast, Hamlin’s decision to take four tires did not yield the anticipated advantages, with varying tire strategies complicating the final laps. “The Cup Series race was different competition, different cars,” Hamlin explained, noting that the mixed strategies from other drivers influenced the outcome significantly.

Reflecting on his team’s efforts, Hamlin emphasized that Joe Gibbs Racing provided him with the tools necessary to compete at a high level. “They prepared a fast race car,” he noted, acknowledging the team’s support despite the disappointment of not achieving the championship.

As the awards ceremony approaches in Scottsdale, Hamlin expressed the emotional toll of celebrating a rival’s success after intense competition. He contrasted his current feelings with past defeats, emphasizing the depth of his disappointment this time around. “It’s painful,” he said, regarding the tradition of losing drivers attending the victory celebrations.

Looking ahead, Hamlin confirmed his plans to continue racing next season, despite initial comments that suggested uncertainty about his future. “I’m going to need some time on this one,” he stated, indicating that the process of moving on from this season’s heartbreak would require careful reflection.

With Larson celebrating his second title as Hamlin prepares to regroup, the veteran driver remains focused as he navigates this challenging period in his career.
