Puchyr Set to Acquire Spire Motorsports, Expand Team for 2027

In a significant development in the NASCAR landscape, T.J. Puchyr, co-founder of Spire Motorsports, has finalized an agreement with Rick Ware for the acquisition of his racing team. This arrangement is set to take effect for the 2027 season and outlines plans to expand to a three-car operation within the NASCAR Cup Series. Ware will remain actively involved, retaining all current staff, including driver Cody Ware of the No. 51 car.

“I am bullish on wanting to build a three-car team,” Puchyr stated, emphasizing his belief in the sport’s direction under the France family and projecting that charters are valued at $75 million or more.

Currently, Ware holds two charters. One is in active use by Cody Ware, while the other is leased to RFK Racing for the current season. However, a legal dispute looms between Ware and Legacy Motor Club, which filed a lawsuit in April alleging that Ware reneged on a charter sale agreement. In response, Ware’s countersuit claims that the contract was for the 2027 season, with disputes arising over adjustments to terms and the charter number.

Addressing the conflict, Puchyr remarked on Legacy Motor Club’s owner Jimmie Johnson, stating, “If anybody deserves a pass it is Jimmie… I don’t think Jimmie has all the facts… we don’t do business that way.”

Puchyr previously sold his shares in Spire Motorsports to Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports, last year. He has since taken on a consulting role for various racing teams, including Rick Ware and Legacy Motor Club.

Rick Ware Racing has not yet issued a statement regarding the acquisition.
