Ryan Truex to Make NASCAR Cup Series Return at Mexico City
Ryan Truex is set to drive the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series event in Mexico City, stepping in for Denny Hamlin, who is with his family following the birth of his son. This marks Truex’s return to Cup Series racing for the first time since 2014.
Truex expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating, “I’m grateful for the experience and grateful to be here. I just want to enjoy the weekend.” He emphasized the value of being at a track where he can practice extensively, noting that most drivers have limited experience on the course.
Having served as Hamlin’s standby driver since the Coca-Cola 600, Truex was prepared but faced uncertainty leading up to this race. “Every time (Chris) Gayle would text me, my heart would stop,” he remarked, reflecting on the anxiety of awaiting confirmation for the race seat.
In his previous stint in the Cup Series during 2014, Truex struggled with 26 starts, which he felt may not have been the right career choice. Since then, he has focused on part-time roles in the Craftsman Truck Series and Xfinity Series, and built a relationship with Joe Gibbs Racing, where he currently serves as a reserve driver and simulator operator.
Truex noted the differences between the previous generation of Cup cars and the current Gen 7, stating, “I feel like I’ve run a million laps here already in the past month.” He is looking forward to utilizing practice time to refine his skills and adapt to the circuit.
With this race in Mexico City, Truex aims not only to secure a competitive showing but also to gain invaluable experience as he re-enters the NASCAR landscape.
