NASCAR’s Thrilling Weekend in Mexico Raises Questions for the Future
NASCAR’s recent races at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico showcased thrilling competition, challenging perceptions of the venue’s capacity for excitement—a contrast to some Formula 1 events held there. However, the future of NASCAR’s presence in Mexico remains uncertain as executives consider their next steps following the completion of the first year of a three-year contract with OCESA, the event organizer.
Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s senior vice president and great-grandson of founder Bill France, indicated that a decision about extending the event will be made within one to two months. “We had a full contract with an extension option,” Kennedy stated, emphasizing the importance of reconnecting with partners to deliberate on the event’s future.
The scheduling of NASCAR events poses significant logistical challenges, particularly as the Mexico race followed a visit to Michigan and precedes Pocono, complicating travel logistics. Availability at the Autódromo is limited due to other major events, including Formula E and Formula 1, along with potential IndyCar races and concert events slated for early 2026.
Kennedy noted, "We’re working on planning the 2026 calendar. We’ve learned a lot this weekend, and I’m hopeful as we shape the future of NASCAR in Mexico."
Fan passion was palpable throughout the event, highlighting a unique atmosphere. Kennedy remarked on the electrifying energy within the stadium, where fans vocally engaged with the racing action. “Every time someone made a pass or had contact, you could hear the fans over the sound of the engines,” he noted.
In addressing the competitiveness of NASCAR against a backdrop of increased motorsport events in Mexico, Kennedy expressed confidence in NASCAR’s distinct appeal: "Our racing style is bold and aggressive, with plenty of three or even four-wide racing heading into Turn 1. That’s our DNA.”
As motorsport continues to evolve in North America and beyond, NASCAR’s commitment to maintaining its unique identity and connection with fans remains at the forefront of its strategic considerations for future events.
