IMSA Confirms Potential Growth for 2026 Season
Atlanta, GA — Following the announcement of 54 cars for the 2026 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, IMSA President John Doonan indicated further interest could lead to more entries. “There’s a couple — only because folks are finishing up putting their programs together,” said Doonan. He emphasized that the current entrants are fully committed and well-prepared for the upcoming season.
New Entries on the Horizon
Notable among potential new participants is Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL), whose longstanding relationship with BMW ends after the Motul Petit Le Mans. RLL is likely to pursue a GTD PRO or LMP2 entry for 2026, as no spots are open in the GTP class. Additionally, Random Vandals Racing is close to confirming its full-season plan for 2026.
Doonan also mentioned plans for a record grid at the 2026 Rolex 24 At Daytona, potentially reaching the 61-car limit. “At one point, based on interest, we were north of 80 entries,” he stated, highlighting logistical challenges linked to such numbers.
Nicky Hays Receives IMSA Diversity Scholarship
Filipino-American driver Nicky Hays has been awarded the 2026-27 IMSA Diverse Driver Development Scholarship, which provides up to $380,000 in benefits for competition in IMSA-sanctioned series. Hays, 24, plans to race for Random Vandals Racing in the Michelin Pilot Challenge Grand Sport (GS) class. “Nicky is a deserving recipient of the IMSA D3 Scholarship,” remarked Brandon Huddleston, IMSA’s VP of Partnership Marketing and Business Development.
Hays, whose background includes success in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America, emphasized the importance of perseverance and the support of his family throughout his racing career.
Random Vandals Racing Aims for 2026 Participation
Random Vandals Racing is optimistic about joining the 2026 WeatherTech Championship after delays unrelated to the team or its partnership with BMW. Team Principal Paul Sparta noted, “We have some unforeseen complications that have delayed things… but we’re committed partners.” Sparta anticipates announcing further plans shortly, including hopes for a full-time entry alongside additional races.
IMSA and BDO Extend Partnership
In other news, IMSA has renewed and expanded its multi-year collaboration with BDO USA. The partnership will enhance the IMSA VIP Experiences program, promoting greater client engagement at events, and continue the BDO Knows Strategy Award, recognizing outstanding race strategies.
This comprehensive approach reflects IMSA’s ongoing commitment to teamwork and strategy, aligning closely with BDO’s client advisory philosophy.
As the motorsports season progresses, all eyes will remain on IMSA as it navigates possibilities for expansion and further talent development in the sport.
