Genesis GMR-001 Hypercar Development on Track for 2026 Debut
Le Mans, France — At a recent press conference, Cyril Abiteboul, team principal of Genesis Magma Racing, confirmed that preparations for the Genesis GMR-001 Hypercar, slated for a 2026 racing debut, are progressing as planned.
Hyundai Motorsport is currently conducting parallel dynamometer tests on the powertrain components, with a successful evaluation of the engine and rear transmission recently completed. Following this, the team has initiated simulation tests designed to replicate the stresses encountered during multiple laps on various circuits.
Abiteboul indicated that the first official test is expected to occur in August, contingent upon adherence to the predetermined schedule. “We’ve planned six test sessions across six circuits between August and the homologation deadline in December,” he noted. The testing will include a variety of setups, featuring either one or two cars and running both day and night sessions to maximize developmental opportunities.
To further support its ambitions, Hyundai Motorsport has established a new European subsidiary dedicated to Genesis Magma Racing. This facility is located near Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, strategically close to ORECA’s factory, where parts for the initial GMR-001 chassis are being sourced.
Simultaneously, Hyundai Motorsport is relocating to a new headquarters in Offenbach and a technical center in Fechenheim, near Frankfurt. The combined facilities will span over 10,000 square meters and accommodate nearly 300 employees. Genesis Magma Racing plans to hire approximately 50 additional staff by the end of 2026.
“The expansion of Hyundai Motorsport is essential for laying a robust foundation for Genesis Magma Racing,” said Abiteboul. “The team is built on strong elements: a competitive chassis from ORECA, an optimal location in Le Castellet, an experienced international team, and the best influences from Korean culture to propel us forward at hyperspeed.”
As developments continue toward the GMR-001’s competitive debut, attention shifts to upcoming testing and the team’s integration into the global motorsport landscape.
