Chevrolet Sports Car Classic: Practice Session Insights
Detroit, MI – In a critical lead-up to qualifying for the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic, the #25 Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 topped the second practice session with a commanding performance. Sheldon van der Linde clocked a best lap of 1:06.427, just half a second shy of Nick Tandy’s course record set during last year’s qualifying.
The #7 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963, driven by Tandy, secured the second-fastest time at 1:06.720. However, Tandy’s session ended prematurely after a slide into the tire barrier at Turn One caused damage and prompted a red flag, nullifying his fastest lap.
The #10 Cadillac Wayne Taylor Racing V-Series.R also faced penalties after Filipe Albuquerque’s collision with the same barrier, resulting in a red flag for debris.
Dries Vanthoor, the dominant polesitter in previous IMSA races, placed third in the #24 RLL BMW, followed by Renger van der Zande in the #93 Acura Meyer Shank Racing ARX-06 and Matt Campbell in the #6 Penske Porsche.
In the GTD PRO category, the two Pratt Miller Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3s continued their strong form, with Antonio Garcia’s #3 Corvette leading at 1:10.565, closely followed by teammate Tommy Milner’s #4, a mere hundredth of a second behind. Both Corvettes will lose their fastest laps in qualifying due to a red flag incident attributed to them.
The #9 Pfaff Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan GT3 finished third in the GTD PRO class, followed by the #64 Ford Multimatic Motorsports Mustang GT3 and the #14 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus RC F GT3, rounding out the top five.
Qualifying is set to begin at 4:50 PM ET, with live coverage available on the official IMSA YouTube channel, IMSA.TV, and Peacock in the United States.
