Championship Dynamics in IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge at Road Atlanta

Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta hosted a pivotal round of the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge, where key drivers Valentino Catalano and Kiko Porto solidified their championship standings.

In the first of two 45-minute races on Thursday, Catalano secured a second-place finish driving the #30 Gebhardt Intralogistics Motorsports Duqueine D08, confirming his position at the top of the LMP3 class. He fell short to teammate Oscar Tunjo in the #31 Gebhardt Duqueine, who clinched victory by a margin of 5.389 seconds after starting from pole. This win marked Tunjo’s second of the season, crucial for his return after missing the recent tripleheader at Virginia International Raceway.

“It’s the first year for me in America… to win straightaway in my first year is amazing,” Catalano remarked, reflecting on his success.

In the Grand Sport X (GSX) category, Porto highlighted his championship credentials with an emphatic victory in the #8 RAFA Racing Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2, finishing 14.714 seconds ahead of Steven Clemons in the #76 BSI Racing entry. Porto’s race strategy paid off when he seized the lead on lap 3, ultimately taking his eighth win of the season.

“It feels amazing…the amount of work they’ve done since Daytona is incredible,” Porto stated regarding his team’s efforts throughout the season.

The Grand Touring Daytona X (GTDX) race saw Jake Walker in the #6 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 extend his winning streak to five consecutive races, finishing 3.714 seconds ahead of Adelson in the #24 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R. Despite losing the lead after an error, Adelson remains poised to clinch the GTDX title with a start in the second race.

“Adam and I had a great battle… but tomorrow will be really good, I’m sure,” Walker commented, looking ahead.

Bronze Cup winners from Thursday included Brian Thienes (#77 Forte Racing Ligier JS P320, P3), Samantha Tan (#38 ST Racing BMW M4 GT3, GTDX), and Allen Patten (#21 Thunder Bunny Racing BMW M4 GT4 EVO, GSX), all of whom have unofficially secured their respective Bronze Cup titles.

The race featured three full-course cautions, impacting strategy and race dynamics.

The final race of the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge season is scheduled for today at 8:30 AM local time.
