Dominique Bastien Returns to the Track: A Remarkable Rookie Test at Age 79
Portimão, Portugal – At 79, Dominique ‘Dom’ Bastien once again defies the conventions of age in motorsports by participating in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) Rookie Test. This comes as he prepares to turn 80 next month, highlighting a unique commitment to racing that has made him a notable figure in endurance racing.
Bastien, already the oldest starter and finisher at Le Mans, previously competed twice for Proton Competition in the GTE Am class, achieving a noteworthy 13th place in class at the 2021 event. His career has continued to flourish, with experience in the 24H Series and Porsche one-make racing.
His recent participation at the ELMS Rookie Test was facilitated by professional driver Tristan Vautier, who set up a training session with Proton Competition. Bastien arrived at Portimão prepped with extensive simulator training and a determination to match the quicker LMP2 prototypes.
Despite initial challenges adjusting to the car’s intense G-forces and a cramped cockpit, he clocked a commendable best lap of 1:38.8, placing him 23rd of 72 in the overall standings for the session. This time represents a significant benchmark of success for Bastien, considering the competitive nature of the field.
“Five seconds off top pros isn’t bad for a first day,” Bastien noted, reflecting on his performance. “But the beauty of the LMP2 is that my time places me mid-table, which is a welcome change from my past experiences.”
Bastien’s journey exemplifies the ethos of perseverance in motorsports, and as he strives for a spot in the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours, his participation serves as an inspiration to racers of all ages.
In closing, Bastien’s comeback performances are a testament to his enduring passion for racing, as he continues to make his mark in a sport often dominated by younger competitors.
