DSC Splits Car of the Year Awards for 2025
The Daily Sports Car (DSC) announced a pivotal change for its annual Car of the Year awards, dividing the honors into Prototype and GT categories for the 2025 selections. This year, the GT Car of the Year accolade has been jointly awarded to the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R and the Toyota GR Supra GT500.
Performance Highlights of 2024
The BMW M4 GT3 EVO, winner of the 2023 award, continued its dominance by clinching multiple titles, including four out of five Intercontinental GT Challenge (IGTC) rounds, and securing the Manufacturers’ Championship. It also excelled in three regional GT World Challenge series and wrapped up the IMSA GTD PRO Endurance Cup.
The Corvette Z06 GT3.R demonstrated significant improvement in its second competitive year, earning its first IMSA GTD PRO Championship and the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) LMGT3 title. The model achieved a prestigious GTD victory at the Daytona 24 Hours and multiple wins in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and GT World Asia.
Ferrari’s 296 GT3 enjoyed a strong season, highlighted by winning the FIA GT World Cup at Macau and numerous top finishes across series, including the GT World Challenge Europe Bronze class and the IMSA GTD Endurance Cup.
The Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO captured the Global GT World Challenge manufacturers’ title, while the Porsche 911 GT3 R achieved a staggering number of victories, including at Le Mans, thus cementing its legacy through WEC and GT World Challenge championships.
The Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 capped its tenure with a breakthrough win at the Spa 24 Hours, while the aging Lexus RC F GT3 and the often-overlooked Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 also showed competitive spirit, with the Lexus securing its first WEC victory.
In the GT4 class, the Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 found success in both American and British circuits, and the BMW M4 GT4 EVO collected another SRO GT4 Global Manufacturers’ title.
New Awards Structure
Looking forward, the DSC will further categorize the GT Car of the Year award into distinct GT and Prototype honors in 2025. This new structure reflects the growing competitiveness and diversity within both categories.
Looking Ahead
The Corvette Z06 GT3.R, despite initial setbacks, has emerged as a legitimate contender on international stages, including notable victories in the IMSA series and ELMS with impressive consistency by drivers Antonio García and Alexander Sims.
The Toyota GR Supra GT500 has continued to dominate the SUPER GT series, setting records and winning consistently. With its technical evolution and strategic prowess, it has become a formidable contender under the tight regulations of modern GT racing.
As the 2025 season approaches, both award-winning models highlight the strength of their respective brands in a highly competitive motorsports environment, reflecting not only engineering excellence but also strategic success on the racetrack.
