Michelin 24 Hours of Dubai: Pre-Race Insights
As the Michelin 24 Hours of Dubai approaches, key figures in the motorsports community have shared insights highlighting survival, traffic management, and the evolving nature of this endurance classic.
Survival and Strategy: Prost’s Perspective
Nico Prost emphasized the importance of survival in this year’s race. “It’s going to be very much about survival here,” he stated, reflecting a common sentiment in the paddock. With over 60 cars anticipated across multiple classes, Prost noted that effective traffic management will be critical, particularly during the night. “We just hope it stays together, no scratches,” he added, stressing a cautious approach amidst the complexities of the endurance format.
Rising Star: McIntosh Takes on Double Duty
Anthony McIntosh arrives at the Dubai 24 Hours buoyed by a strong performance in the Abu Dhabi round, where he secured second place. “The last race of the year I took second, the first race of the year I took second,” he recounted, highlighting his consistency. Notably, McIntosh is set to compete in two GT3 entries after a last-minute call-up by teammate Darren Leung. “I didn’t even know who our teammates were,” McIntosh admitted, displaying readiness to tackle the challenge ahead.
Key Challenge: Engel on Traffic Management
Winward Racing’s Maro Engel outlined that effective traffic management will define race outcomes. He likened the experience at Dubai to the Nürburgring Nordschleife, where diverse class speeds complicate racing dynamics. “The challenge is the amount of cars and the different classes. We don’t really have that anywhere else,” he noted. Engel believes that a blend of strategy, particularly with Code 60 periods, will be pivotal. “Getting to the finish is probably the biggest one,” he asserted.
Transformation of the Dubai 24 Hours
Former F1 driver Tiago Monteiro is attending the event for the first time, observing a marked evolution in its stature. “A few years back this was more of a fun race… now it’s getting more and more serious,” he observed, emphasizing the heightened professionalism evident throughout the paddock. Monteiro commended Dubai’s development both as a racing event and as a cosmopolitan hub, stating, “It’s a great event to start the year like this,” reinforcing the role of the 24 Hours of Dubai as an essential early-season fixture.
As the race weekend unfolds, these insights set the stage for what promises to be a competitive and strategically complex 24-hour challenge in Dubai.
