Ford Expands Presence in FIA WEC with GT3 and Hypercar Programs
Ford Performance is set to enhance its motorsport portfolio in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) by maintaining its commitment to the LMGT3 class through the Mustang GT3, even as it prepares for the debut of its ORECA-based Hypercar program in 2027.
Mark Rushbrook, Ford Performance’s global director, articulated the brand’s strategic intent, stating, "We want our racing, race to road, and have that direct tie." The Mustang GT3 platform, originating from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan, plays a pivotal role in this approach. Rushbrook highlighted the advantages of the recent rule extension for Hypercar, which now runs through the end of the 2032 season, reinforcing Ford’s long-term vision in sportscar racing.
The decision to enter the Hypercar category aligns with a broader expansion strategy. Rushbrook emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation, stating, “We are meticulously building all of our motorsports programmes… focused on hiring the very best engineers and technicians."
Contrasting Ford’s global strategy in WEC, the company is simultaneously executing a factory program in IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, focused on the Mustang GTD Pro. Meanwhile, there are no current plans to integrate the Hypercar into the GTP class.
Ford’s partnership with ORECA is crucial, as the French tech powerhouse gears up to support multiple programs, including Ford’s Hypercar plans. Rushbrook praised ORECA’s proven track record in LMP2 racing, asserting that their experience complements Ford’s objectives well.
ORECA head Hugues de Chaunac noted the advantages of their expanded facility near Circuit Paul Ricard, describing it as a "stadium" capable of supporting high-level operations.
As preparations accelerate for Ford’s first chassis build, details surrounding the engine and styling of the Hypercar remain undisclosed. Rushbrook concluded, "We want to win, so the aerodynamists will be left to design the car!"
Further updates are anticipated as Ford continues to progress with its ambitious motorsports initiatives.
