Franchitti Makes GT3 Debut at Dubai 24 Hours with Team Parker Racing
Four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti is set to make his GT3 debut at the Michelin 24 Hours of Dubai, driving the Mercedes-AMG GT3 for Team Parker Racing alongside Rob Huff, Shaun Lynn, and Max Lynn. Franchitti emphasized that his participation focuses on camaraderie and enjoyment rather than a competitive comeback.
“This is a very good place to do it,” Franchitti said, reflecting on the atmosphere and diverse competitor mix at the event. Noting the balance of experienced professionals and less seasoned drivers, he remarked on the “old-school atmosphere” of the paddock, highlighting the supportive environment among teams and participants.
Franchitti, however, faces a learning curve adapting to the GT3 machinery, which differs significantly from his single-seater experience. “I’m trying to figure the car out — it’s probably the opposite of my driving style,” he explained, acknowledging both the frustrations and rewards of the adjustment process. The Dubai Autodrome offers a challenging layout, with areas demanding precision and commitment, particularly through turns five and six.
Rob Huff, another seasoned driver, addressed the team’s strategic approach for the race, calling it a “learning game” as they adapt to the performance characteristics of the new GT3 car. Huff emphasized that understanding tire behavior and balance will be crucial for endurance, citing past races where survival often outweighed initial grid positions.
“Ultimately, we’ve got to be in it at the end to get a result,” Huff stated, underscoring the need for patience in the race’s early stages before recalibrating ambitions in the closing hours.
Both drivers acknowledged the unique physical challenges posed by the Dubai circuit, including its long laps and demanding technical sections. Huff noted that while modern GT3 cars are robust, adapting driving styles is imperative, particularly for those accustomed to older machinery.
Amid Dubai’s environmental challenges—sand, heat, and humidity—the race’s extended night segments will require sustained concentration. Team Parker Racing aims to navigate early traffic efficiently and ensure their car remains competitive as the race progresses.
As Franchitti and his team take to the track, their focus will be on seizing opportunities while maintaining their car’s integrity through the grueling 24 hours ahead.
