D’station Racing Clinches Dominant Victory at Fuji GT Sprint Race
D’station Racing’s Tomonobu Fujii delivered a flawless performance in the #777 Aston Martin Vantage GT3, securing a commanding pole-to-win victory in Sunday’s GT300-exclusive Fuji GT Sprint Race.
This marked the first time 28 GT3 and GTA-GT300 cars raced independently in an Autobacs SUPER GT Series event, covering a 50-minute distance. Fujii set the benchmark throughout the weekend, recording the fastest times in both Practice and Qualifying, clinching pole with a substantial margin of almost four-tenths of a second over Nobuteru Taniguchi in the #4 Goodsmile Hatsune Miku Mercedes-AMG GT3. The #2 Hyper Water INGING Toyota GR86, driven by Yuui Tsutsumi, completed the top three.
The race unfolded intensely from the start; Tsutsumi overtook Taniguchi for second on the opening lap while Fujii quickly established a lead. Notable incidents included a collision involving Miki Koyama and Yoshiaki Katayama, leading to retirements for the #6 Uni-Robo Bluegrass Ferrari 296 GT3 and the #31 apr Lexus LC 500h. Later, the #61 Subaru BRZ R&D Sport suffered a mechanical failure.
As Fujii and Tsutsumi maintained their 1-2 positions, pending battles for third ensued. Togo Suganami, piloting the #65 LEON Pyramid AMG, made an impressive move to claim third from Taniguchi with 15 minutes remaining. Pressure mounted as Iori Kimura’s #5 Mach Syaken/Air Buster MC86 closed in on Taniguchi for fourth.
Fujii ultimately secured a lights-to-flag victory, finishing 1.2 seconds ahead of Tsutsumi. This win marks his tenth career GT300 victory, placing him among the elite drivers with double-digit wins in the category.
Reflecting on his success, Fujii stated, “Today there was some real pressure, so I really wanted to get pole position and worked hard to win the race… the team worked hard to fix the car, and it performed beautifully.”
Tsutsumi and Suganami completed the podium, with Suganami and co-driver Naoya Gamou retaining their lead in the GT300 Championship despite Fujii and Charlie Fagg’s strong performance, which brought them within four and a half points of the championship leaders.
In closing standings, Kimura achieved a notable fourth-place finish for Team Mach—its first top-five result in over three years. Taniguchi finished fifth, while Zak O’Sullivan, initially seventh, received a significant 40-second penalty post-race, relegating him to 17th place.
