Gar Robinson Steps Back from Full-Time IMSA Racing
Gar Robinson, a two-time IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Champion, has announced his decision to step back from full-time sports car racing to explore new avenues within the motorsports realm. This announcement, made via social media, emphasizes that Robinson is not retiring but rather shifting his focus.
Robinson expressed his gratitude for his time in sports car racing, stating, “Endurance sports car racing has been one of the most incredible adventures in my life.” Underlining his achievements, he won the IMSA LMP3 championships in 2021 and 2023 while driving for Riley Motorsports. This partnership has evolved, leading Robinson to LMP2 competition starting in 2024.
Before his 30th birthday in January 2024, Robinson secured victories in all four major IMSA endurance races: the Daytona 24 Hours, Sebring 12 Hours, Watkins Glen 6 Hours, and Petit Le Mans. He also claimed the SCCA Trans Am TA2 championships in 2015 and 2017. Currently, he ranks third in the LMP2 championship standings alongside co-driver Felipe Fraga after five races.
Looking ahead, Robinson aims to focus on off-road racing in North America and Brazil, with plans to revive his family’s racing team, Robinson Racing, originally established by his father in 1990. He stated, “The time away will give me new opportunities… and I look forward to adventures in places like out west, and down in Brazil."
Robinson’s transition reflects a broader trend in motorsports where drivers seek diverse competitive experiences while maintaining a connection to their roots. The motorsports community will undoubtedly keep a keen eye on his future ventures.
