Tribute to Garry Rogers: A Legacy in Australian Motorsports
Garry Rogers, the esteemed owner of Garry Rogers Motorsport and a pivotal figure in Australian motorsport, passed away last week at the age of 80. Rogers leaves behind a profound legacy, highlighted by his team’s remarkable achievements, specifically as the only double winners of the Bathurst 24 Hours.
Under Rogers’ stewardship, the team secured significant victories, including the Bathurst 1000 in 2000 and an overarching dominance in the Bathurst 24 Hours. The team’s Holden Monaro 427C, equipped with a powerful 7-liter GM V8 engine, clinched both overall wins of the 24 Hours event in 2002 and 2003, demonstrating unparalleled performance and resilience.
In 2002, a team comprising Cameron McConville, Nathan Pretty, Steven Richards, and Garth Tander took the first victory. The following year, a star-studded lineup, including Jason Bright and Peter Brock, secured a one-two finish, reaffirming the Monaro’s status in Australian racing history.
Rogers’ contributions extended beyond these wins; his efforts were instrumental in elevating the endurance GT racing scene in Australia. The Monaros, despite initial controversies, have solidified their place as legends in Australian motorsport, just as their creator will be remembered.
Garry Rogers’ legacy endures, and he will be missed by the motorsport community.
