Michelle Gatting Returns to Racing in ELMS Despite Injuries
Imola, Italy – Michelle Gatting is set to return to competitive racing this weekend at the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) event at Imola, just weeks after sustaining multiple foot fractures during a pit stop at the Le Mans 24 Hours. The Danish driver, who races for the Iron Dames in a Porsche 911 GT3, has worked diligently to be fit for the race, emphasizing her commitment to the championship.
“The goal since the injury was to be ready for this race,” Gatting stated. “We’re fighting for a championship, so I knew I had to be back.”
Gatting has been training daily despite her recovery being sidelined by multiple fractures. She remains on crutches and in a protective boot but expressed confidence after her first test session at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, where she experienced no pain while driving. “It was amazing. I could drive the way I want to,” she remarked.
With her teammates Celia Martin and Sarah Bovy, Gatting leads the LMGT3 class standings by four points following a victory in Spain and a seventh-place finish at Paul Ricard. “We have a chance to win this year, and I need to be part of it,” Gatting noted, referring to their near-miss in the championship last season where they fell short by just 11 points.
However, the 2025 ELMS season poses additional challenges. The Iron Dames will compete with an added 30 kilograms of success ballast, while competitors like Aston Martin, Corvette, and McLaren have been granted weight reductions. “We know we’re not going to win here,” Gatting acknowledged, adding that their strategy will focus on securing points, aiming for a potential fifth place finish.
Looking ahead, Gatting is scheduled to participate in the upcoming FIA WEC race in Brazil, though her participation will depend on her recovery post-Imola. If she’s unable to race, Bovy is prepared to step in again.
“As of now, we have to wait and see until after Sunday,” she concluded. “We will do our best to make sure nothing goes wrong because I want to be there.”
Gatting’s tenacity and teamwork will be crucial as the Iron Dames strive for success amid a challenging season.
