Gibson Technology Announces Next-Generation LMP2 Powertrain Collaborations

Gibson Technology has revealed its technical partners for the development of a new LMP2 powertrain set to debut in 2028. This initiative, part of a contract secured through a competitive tender process, will see Gibson collaborating with Nissan/NISMO to produce a bespoke 3.4-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, featuring direct fuel injection.

The partnership marks NISMO’s return to LMP2 competition after a hiatus since 2016, aiming to enhance the integration of modern automotive efficiency with the rigors of endurance racing. Gibson highlights that the new engine will emphasize reliability and sustainability while providing a cost-effective solution for racing teams, ensuring consistent supply.

The transition to a turbocharged engine represents a significant shift for Gibson, which has primarily supplied a naturally aspirated V8 since 2017. Past engines included the Nissan VK45DE and the Zytek V8 from the class’s inception in 2004.

Key technical collaborators include Bosch Motorsport, responsible for the electronic architecture, including the ECU and a new steering wheel developed by MoTeC. Additionally, Xtrac will design a new transverse gearbox tailored for the upcoming LMP2 platform.

Gibson managing director Mark Brittan expressed pride in the collaboration, emphasizing the project’s potential to deliver outstanding performance while managing costs effectively. More technical details are expected to be released in the coming months.
