Goodyear Prepares for New Era in LMP2 Racing
Goodyear is laying the groundwork for a transformative shift in the LMP2 category as the 2028 chassis and powertrain tender process concludes. The American tire manufacturer recently revealed its commitment to future innovations, having successfully launched an updated LMP2 slick tire at the European Le Mans Series event in Paul Ricard in May.
With a contract secured for LMP2 in both the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) and Le Mans from 2028, Goodyear’s engineering team is starting anew, specifically focusing on sustainability and performance optimization. Mike McGregor, head of endurance racing at Goodyear, emphasized the fresh approach, stating, "This will be a new thing, as we need to take a look at what technology we can bring and what we can do with that product."
Sustainability is a core objective, with aspirations to incorporate a greater percentage of sustainable materials than the current 33% achieved in GT3 programs. McGregor noted, "We need to carry on that messaging as we put together a path forward."
The new LMP2 tire introduced in 2025 has received positive feedback, with teams able to quad-stint tires during the Le Mans race, resulting in a notable reduction in deflations—a testament to its durability. "The performance levels seen were about the same, but that was always expected. We’ve seen gains already,” McGregor added.
Looking ahead, Goodyear aims to expand its presence in elite motorsport, potentially engaging in the Legends of Le Mans series and evaluating opportunities in the FIA WEC’s rapidly growing Hypercar class after 2029. As the competition intensifies, particularly against Michelin, factors like performance, consistency, and sustainability will shape the landscape.
McGregor underscored the strategic vision under new leadership, stating, "Our CEO Mark Stewart and CMO Will Roland have made it clear: ‘We want to be number one in tyres and service, and we will do what it takes to get there.’"
With the 50th anniversary of Goodyear’s first Le Mans win this year, the company remains poised to explore every championship opportunity in pursuit of continued excellence.
