Griffin Eyes Historic Win as British GT Championship Unfolds
Matt Griffin, a prominent figure in the British GT Championship, is set to make a significant return to the series in 2025, racing the Ferrari 296 GT3. The Irish driver, currently sixth on the all-time win list, aims to secure his 15th victory after a five-year hiatus from the competition.
Griffin began his remarkable GT journey in 2003 with an impressive eight wins during his rookie season. Teaming up once again with long-time partner Duncan Cameron, he brings invaluable experience to a field characterized by intense competition. “Winning a race now is probably harder than it was 10-15 years ago. The depth of the field has really improved,” Griffin remarked, emphasizing the championship’s escalating competitiveness.
The 2025 season marks the 33rd year of the British GT Championship, a series that Griffin believes is among the toughest national championships globally. His relationship with Cameron dates back to the Ferrari 430 era, and the duo previously claimed victory together, setting the stage for their current campaign.
Griffin has fondly recalled driving Ferrari’s various GT3 models throughout his career, noting a special connection to the 458 GT3, which launched his professional relationship with the marque. “Every driver has a car they’re emotionally connected to, and for me, it’s the 458 GT3,” he stated.
As the only Ferrari team in the 2025 lineup, Spirit of Race faces challenges, particularly under the current Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations. At the Silverstone 500, their return to the British GT circuit was cut short after sustaining damage from contact with another competitor. “We were the best-placed Ferrari in P10; we could have been in the top five without the incident,” Griffin explained.
Looking ahead, Griffin is optimistic about upcoming races, particularly at Spa, where he believes the team can leverage its strengths. “Right now, the car is stronger on long-run pace than in qualifying. I think Spa will suit us,” he noted, while also eyeing Donington as a potential race for success.
With the right combination of driver skill and team support, Griffin remains focused on claiming at least one victory this season, setting his sights on a podium finish as the championship progresses.
