Ligier Strengthens GT2 Bid with JS2 RS Homologation
French manufacturer Ligier is set to revitalize the struggling GT2 formula, entering the market with its newly homologated JS2 RS for the 2026 season. The initiative aims to attract cost-sensitive customers with a competitive yet affordable racing option.
The JS2 RS features a robust 3.5L Ford EcoBoost V6 engine, delivering up to 650 horsepower, while maintaining a pre-Balance of Performance (BoP) weight of 1,100 kg. This competitive edge positions the car to offer GT3-level performance at a price point comparable to GT4—approximately €259,000. As Pierre Nicolet, Managing Director of Ligier Automotive, highlighted, “The RS is cost-effective to anyone who wants to get a start in a bespoke carbon GT chassis with the aim of an endurance format.”
Incorporating a fully carbon monocoque chassis and advanced design elements—for instance, a completely removable front block akin to LMP vehicles—the JS2 RS showcases significant engineering advancements over its predecessor, the JS2 R. Nicolet emphasized the intention to fit within the GT pyramid, identifying GT2 as a strategic entry point for non-OEM manufacturers.
The car undergoes further refinement as teams await final BoP parameters to determine its racing specifications. Preliminary testing at Magny-Cours and Barcelona has demonstrated impressive reliability and performance, suggesting that the JS2 RS is ready for competition.
Ligier plans to deliver multiple units to customers, with commitments for two cars each in the GT2 European Series and Ultimate Cup, as well as one entry in the USA’s World Racing League. The GT2 European Series will also benefit from the new SRO GT Academy initiative, aimed at fostering young talent in collaboration with other participating manufacturers.
As the motorsport community anticipates the upcoming season, Ligier remains optimistic about the JS2 RS’s market viability, with additional racing plans in development. Nicolet hinted at broader ambitions, stating, “We are targeting other series in the future, that’s for sure. I can say at this stage that we have some fun plans.”
With other manufacturers like Ginetta and Lamborghini also poised to enter the field, the 2026 season could witness a significant surge in competitors, potentially exceeding 20 entries, which would bolster the GT2 category’s profile within endurance racing.
