2025 FIA WEC: Interlagos Round Recap
The latest round of the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Interlagos saw significant shifts in both the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ standings as the season nears its climax.
Race Results and Championship Shakeup
The #51 Ferrari crew from AF Corse, consisting of Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi, and James Calado, encountered challenges, finishing 11th and reducing their lead in the Hypercar World Endurance Drivers’ Championship to just 12 points over their nearest rivals. The performance was a stark contrast to their competitors.
In a noteworthy performance, the #83 AF Corse crew, featuring Phil Hanson, Robert Kubica, and Yifei Ye, secured eighth place after a victory at Le Mans, solidifying their second-position status in the standings with a 64-point advantage over Proton Competition’s #963.
Hanson reflected on their performance: “We maximized our potential and finished ahead of faster cars that made mistakes. Strong tire stints were key for us this weekend.”
Conversely, the #50 crew, including Nicklas Nielsen, Miguel Molina, and Antonio Fuoco, faced another setback, remaining point-less and dropping to fourth in the standings. Fuoco noted, “We could have finished in the top nine but were penalized after contact with a GT car. It’s frustrating.”
Cadillac’s Ascendancy
In the race, the #12 Cadillac team clinched victory, contributing to Cadillac’s rise to second in the Manufacturers’ Championship with 120 points. Ferrari maintains a commanding lead with 175 points, while Porsche and Toyota follow with 111 and 95 points, respectively.
LMGT3 Class Dynamics
In the LMGT3 category, the Manthey 1st Phorm team, featuring Richard Lietz, Riccardo Pera, and Ryan Hardwick, increased their points lead to 13 points after scoring eight points at Interlagos. TF Sport’s Jonny Edgar, Ben Keating, and Daniel Juncadella finished seventh in class and remain competitive, trailing by 10 points.
Edgar acknowledged the difficulties: “Penalties hurt us, but the car felt great. We’ll use these points to push forward at COTA.”
Attention now shifts to the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where teams will regroup as the WEC season approaches its final stretch.
