Hiroaki Ishiura to Retire from GT500 After 2025 Season

Toyota Gazoo Racing driver Hiroaki Ishiura has confirmed his retirement from the GT500 class of the Autobacs SUPER GT Series, effective post-2025 season. At 44, Ishiura’s notable career spans 18 seasons since 2008, during which he has secured seven GT500 victories and achieved a championship best of third place in 2012.

Currently, Ishiura and his co-driver Toshiki Oyu rank third in the GT500 standings, bolstered by their recent victory at the Fuji GT 3 Hours Race—a significant win for Ishiura, marking his first in six years and his fifth at this prestigious event. Ishiura’s other two GT500 victories were at the Suzuka 1000km in 2009 and 2016.

In addition to his GT500 tenure, Ishiura spent 11 seasons competing in the Super Formula Championship, winning titles in 2015 and 2017. He is also a three-time class winner at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, reflecting his versatility and skill across various racing formats.

Ishiura, who initially faced challenges securing his place in motorsports, cited significant career moments stemming from his persistence and talent, including being selected for Toyota’s Young Driver Program after an earlier rejection. “This decision was not an easy one, but I felt it was time for me to bring this chapter to a close,” Ishiura stated. He expressed gratitude for his experiences and confirmed intentions to continue racing in other series, emphasizing his enduring passion for motorsport.

The announcement follows fellow teammate Oshima’s retirement from Super Formula. Ishiura pledged to approach his remaining races in GT500 with renewed vigor: “I will drive each and every remaining race… and will fight hard to win the championship.”

Ishiura’s career journey, marked by triumphs and resilience, reflects the evolving landscape of motorsports and the competitive spirit that defines the GT500 class.
