Hypercar Teams Brace for Challenge at 6 Hours São Paulo
As the 6 Hours São Paulo approaches, the resurfacing of Autódromo José Carlos Pace has emerged as a significant factor in tyre strategy and performance. The 4.3 km Interlagos circuit is known for its abrasive asphalt and demanding layout, which places unique pressures on tyres, especially the right side. Following a full resurfacing and additional work this year, teams face the challenge of recalibrating their data.
Pierre Alves, Michelin’s sportscar operations manager, remarked on last year’s demanding surface: “We saw last year that the rear-right specifically has to cope with a lot of energy.” He expressed confidence in the suitability of Medium and Hard compounds for Hypercar teams, despite the unknowns posed by the new surface, notably due to the additional load and heat generated during the race.
In Free Practice sessions leading into the event, Porsche Penske Motorsport’s 963 emerged as the fastest, with the #6 securing a best lap of 1:23.508. Driver Michael Christensen commented positively on the car’s performance, noting improved wear rates but anticipating a decrease in pole time as teams adapt to the conditions.
Conversely, championship leaders Ferrari faced difficulties amid the resurfacing changes and Balance of Performance adjustments. The #51 499P is heavier and less powerful compared to previous events, leading driver Antonio Giovinazzi to acknowledge challenges with thermal balance and straight-line speed.
Though teams report the track feels smoother than in the past, cooler temperatures have influenced tyre selection. Data suggests a shift towards increased use of Medium compounds across the grid this year. Michelin expects teams to favor Mediums on the left side, with some experimenting with Hards on the right rear to offset high load.
Mauro Barbieri, Ferrari’s performance manager, concurred, stating, “I don’t think we will see many Hards in the race.” As the teams finalize their strategies, the selection of tyres, particularly under the new track conditions, will be critical to success in tomorrow’s race.
