McLaren Unveils Project: Endurance, A New Chapter in Hypercar Racing

In a bold move, McLaren has announced Project: Endurance, bringing customers an authentic track-day version of its FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar. This initiative follows in the footsteps of manufacturers like Ferrari and Aston Martin, positioning McLaren as a significant player in the burgeoning Hypercar market.

Background and Development

The concept has been in development for three years, as confirmed by McLaren’s head of HyperTrack cars, Neil Underwood. “We had initial discussions, and it became clear that there was appetite for this collaboration,” Underwood stated, emphasizing the design and racing expertise of both McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing.

Program Overview

The track-day car, aligning with the Hypercar regulations introduced in 2018, will be limited to 30-35 units. Owners will have access to a multi-year program that includes personalized driving development with factory drivers at world-class circuits, setting the stage for participation in the brand’s new racing endeavors.

“It’s not just about the car,” Underwood remarked. “It’s about the experiences—behind the scenes of what will be a very competitive program, watching its evolution, and attending the races.” Customers will join the team on critical development moments, including attending the engine fire-up and participating in testing.

Technical Specifications and Features

The vehicle will closely resemble the LMDh Hypercar initially unveiled at Le Mans, with adaptations for customer drivers. Key modifications include alterations to traction control systems and engine maps to enhance drivability. “It’s a more customer-friendly version designed for amateur drivers,” Underwood explained.

The package incorporates an ‘Arrive and Drive’ service to alleviate logistical concerns, overseeing everything from storage to preparation.

Timeline and Production

McLaren aims for the first validation prototypes to be operational by summer 2024, with full production expected to commence in mid-2027. Final specifications will be finalized following extensive aero testing, with all cars anticipated to be delivered by the end of 2028. Underwood expressed confidence in the timeline, citing previous successful collaborations with chassis partner Dallara.

Looking Ahead

As McLaren prepares to make its mark on the FIA WEC, Project: Endurance aims not only to enhance customer engagement but to solidify the brand’s legacy in endurance racing. With initial deliveries slated for 2027, McLaren’s commitment to this program signals an aggressive push into the competitive world of Hypercar racing.

For now, Project: Endurance stands as a pivotal development in McLaren’s strategy, as they gear up for a new era in motorsport. Further announcements will detail the program’s full scope and updates on customer engagements as the project unfolds.
