Team Penske: Inside the High-Performance Operation
In an in-depth look at Team Penske’s operations, motorsport expert Joel Svensson outlines the meticulous processes that drive success within the organization’s Porsche Penske Motorsport division. As the team gears up for the upcoming IMSA and WEC races, a heavy focus on data-driven analysis and rigorous training dominates the agenda.
“We put each car through a setup and performance analysis program before every event,” Svensson explained. “Our training is intense, involving frequent gym sessions and pit-stop practices to ensure every scenario is covered.”
The facility in Mooresville is abuzz with activity, where race chassis are being methodically stripped and inspected. Following a solid performance at Sebring, which saw a clean sweep of podium finishes, the team is preparing for the upcoming challenge at Long Beach.
Notable practices include a structured division of labor among crew members, ensuring that each car maintains consistent build quality and performance standards. “We operate with multiple sets of bodywork sourced from Porsche, diligently scanning vehicles before key races,” Svensson noted, contrasting this approach to the more rapid turnaround seen in NASCAR operations.
The operation extends beyond immediate race preparations. The 2024 Daytona-winning chassis is undergoing refurbishment as it transitions to a museum piece, showcasing the team’s commitment to heritage and excellence.
Penske’s strategic advantage lies in its dual efforts across IMSA and the FIA WEC, operating both from the Mooresville base and a newly established facility in Mannheim, Germany. Managing Director Jonathan Diuguid emphasized the importance of collaboration: “We leverage our global team for a unified car development approach, mixing personnel for marquee events like Daytona and Le Mans.”
This convergence of LMDh and LMH regulations allows Porsche to compete with a single vehicle across prestigious platforms, enhancing resource efficiency and performance synergy. “We constantly share data and insights between our two bases, allowing us to address challenges swiftly and effectively,” Diuguid stated.
As the season progresses, Team Penske continues to eye Le Mans, a longstanding goal for owner Roger Penske. With aspirations of securing an overall victory, which would be a historic 20th for Porsche, the team’s meticulous preparation and strong partnership dynamics position them well for future success.
With two championships already secured in recent years, the anticipation around the upcoming Le Mans event grows. “If we secure that Le Mans trophy, it would be a monumental achievement,” Svensson added, hinting at a dedicated space in Mooresville anticipating this victory.
As the 2023 season unfolds, Team Penske remains a formidable force in endurance racing, driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence.
