James Kell Joins McLaren GT3 Junior Driver Program for 2026

British driver James Kell has been appointed as a McLaren GT3 Junior Driver for the 2026 season, solidifying a partnership with the Woking-based team that began with his entry into GT racing in 2021.

Kell has shown consistent growth throughout his career, transitioning from GT4 to GT3 and achieving significant accolades, including a Silver Cup victory at the Spa 24 Hours in 2024 and an overall win at Monza in the International GT Open. In 2025, he continued this momentum with additional wins at Portimão and the Red Bull Ring, while also competing in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Gold Cup.

“I’ve always been a fan of the brand since a young age, so to be associated with the factory and have their backing for 2026 is a dream come true,” Kell stated.

During the 2025 season, Kell notched podium finishes at renowned circuits such as Paul Ricard, Spa, and the Nürburgring, ultimately finishing third in the Gold Cup standings despite a DNF at Monza. His ongoing relationship with McLaren across multiple teams—including RJN, Race Lab, and CSA Racing—has been pivotal in his development.

“Every year since 2021, I’ve raced a McLaren with various teams,” Kell remarked, emphasizing the importance of continuity in his progression.

A highlight of his career thus far was securing his first overall GT3 victory during the Monza 500, a race defined by a strategic tire call made in challenging conditions. “I suggested to the team to go for ‘wets’ instead of ‘slicks.’ I went from P8 to P1 in three corners and built up a 36-second lead,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Kell expects to announce his detailed 2026 racing schedule soon, expressing eagerness to enhance his performance. “The aim is to win as much as possible and have consistently strong results, which usually leads to championship success,” he added.

With factory support now solidified, Kell prepares for an exciting 2026 season, ready to take the next step in his GT career.
